Wellesley's Calventus-Coveney, Maurer Earn Northeast Fencing Conference Honors

WELLESLEY, Mass.-- The Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) announced the league's 2017-2018 All-Star honors this and Wellesley College fencing first year Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) and sophomore Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) have each earned All-Star recognition for the first time in their collegiate careers.

Calventus-Coveney was selected as an NFC First Team All-Star after finishing with a season record of 30-6 in women's epee. Maurer earned a Second Team All-Star honor in women's foil, posting a 27-7 record on the year to earn her first All-Star honor. The duo are the first Wellesley fencers to earn NFC All-Star honors for the Blue since the 2009-10 campaign and the first during the tenure of head coach Ariana Klinkov. Calventus-Coveney went on to finish 18th in epee at the 2018 NCAA Northeast Regional. Maurer was Wellesley's top finisher overall and in foil, advancing to the final round of competition en route to earning a 12th place finish.

In addition to the All-Star honors, junior Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) also earned the NFC's 2017-18 Sachs Award on Monday. Wellesley fencing finished the 2017-2018 season with a 20-9 record, earning their first 20-win season since 2010-2011.
