Blue Track's Cwik Breaks 29 Year-Old School Record at BU Valentine Invite

BOSTON -- Senior Sonja Cwik (La Canada, Calif.) took down a 29 year-old school record in the 3000m and classmate Isabella Narvaez (Cali, Colombia) set a new school record in the 200m for Wellesley College track & field on Friday afternoon at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational.

Cwik ran to a time of 9:57.00 to break Jennifer Kegel's record of 9:59.00, set on January 24, 1988 at the New England Athletics Congress Championship. Kegel's time was Wellesley's longest standing indoor record until Cwik's run on Friday. Cwik was first in her heat and 38th overall at the cross-divisional competition.  

Also competing in the 3000m for Wellesley, senior Edie Sharon (Winchester, Mass.) was eighth in her heat and 108th overall with a personal record time of 10:24.73. Cwik and Sharon, All-Region performers this season in cross country, were also recognized this week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as National All-Academic selections.  

Earlier in the day, Narvaez delivered a pair of indoor bests. Another Wellesley school record went down on Narvaez's second trip around the track, as the senior took first in her heat and 41st overall with a school record time of 25.75 seconds. The Wellesley senior also ran to a time of 57.92 seconds in the 400m, a season-best time for the Blue's school record holder in the event. Narvaez's 400m time was good for third in her heat and 33rd overall. 

Senior Sara Vannah (Amherst, Mass.) added one more personal best for the Blue to close out the action on Friday. Vannah took part in the third heat of the 5000m, finishing with a personal record time of 18:33.61. 

Wellesley track & field returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, February 11, at the MIT Invitational.
