Field Hockey Falls to Wesleyan

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wesleyan University sophomore Averill Roberto recorded a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over Wellesley College in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday.  With the win, Wesleyan remains a perfect 5-0 this season.  The loss, their fourth-straight, drops the Blue to 2-4 overall.

Wesleyan opened up scoring in the first period, as Liz Chabot deflected a Roberto shot into the left side of the net for a 1-0 lead.  The Cardinals increased their advantage to 2-0 in the 27th minute of play when Amber Bruckner tipped in a Morgan McCauley attempt after a wild scramble in front of the net.

Wellesley had a chance to get on the board early in the second half when senior Sally Scudder had a one-on-one opportunity in front of the net, but her attempt went just wide of the cage.   Wesleyan then tacked on an insurance goal, as Roberto scored unassisted after a spin move past a Blue defender to put the Cardinals ahead 3-0.

Wesleyan held a 28-12 advantage in shots, including outshooting the Blue 16-2 in the first period.  The Cardinal also held a significant margin in penalty corners, outdrawing Wellesley 19=3 in the category.

Wellesley was kept in the game with strong play from keeper Sarina Sawyer who made 13 stops in the game.  Wesleyan's Tori Redding  was solid between the pipes earning the shutout with six saves.

Both teams return to conference play on Saturday, September 25th.  Wellesley hosts Mount Holyoke in a 12:00pm NEWMAC macth-up, while Wesleyan returns to the area to take on NESCAC-rival Tufts, also at 12:00pm.
