Wellesley Field Hockey Drops Nailbiter to Conn. College

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Connecticut College first-year Laura Sanderson's (Hanover, NH) deflection in the 69th-minute proved to be the game-winner as the Camels defeated host Wellesley College, 3-2, in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon. Connecticut College improves to 5-1 on the season, while Wellesley skids to 3-5.

Sanderson got her stick on a hard shot from senior Abby Hine (Madison, CT) after a Camels penalty corner. Hine's assist pushed her into a tie with Emily Huffman '04 for the program's all-time scoring title, with both players recording 90 career points.

The Camels struck first in the game, as Kat Barker (Dedham, MA) scored off a Kesley Nickerson (Weston, MA) assist. Wellesley keeper Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, IL) saved the first shot in the series, but couldn't contain the rebound, as Nickerson tapped it to Barker for the score.

The Blue knotted it 1-1, just over eight minutes later, when Allison Robbins (Bennington, VT) launched a rocket past the Connecticut College keeper, converting a penalty corner from Emily Lewis (Weston, CT).

The Camels needed just five minutes in the second period to re-gain the lead, with Ali Holland (Watertown, MA) scoring on a pass from Hanna Wagner (Sudbury, MA) to make it 2-1 in favor of the visitors. Sanderson then pushed the lead to 3-1 in the 69th minute, with her deflection on Hine's initial shot.

Wellesley battled back to make it 3-2, as Sarah Mohtes-Chan (Davis, CA) scored on an assist from Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI) with 22 seconds remaining in the game. Wellesley made a push over the remaining seconds, but Conn. kept the Blue in the defensive end to seal the 3-2 victory.

Sawyer was solid between the pipes for the Blue, recording nine saves while facing 22 shots. Aimee Rich (Darien, CT) recorded four stops for the Camels.

Wellesley is back in action this Saturday with a road game at NEWMAC-rival Springfield College at 1:00pm. Connecticut College continues its four-game road trip on Saturday with a 12:00 NESCAC match-up at Bowdoin.
