Lewis Scores Five in Field Hockey Win over WPI

WELLESLEY,Mass.- Sophomore Emily Lewis scored five of the six goals to help bring Wellesley College to a 6-1 victory over WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon. The win improves Wellesley to 3-4 in NEWMAC play (5-9 overall), while the Engineers fall to 0-7 in NEWMAC play (4-10 overall).

Lewis had a career-high of five goals and one assist for a total of 11 points. She scored the Blue's first goal ten minutes into the first half from an assist from sophomore  Whitney Reid. Following that, senior Sally Scudder passed the ball to Lewis who was set up at the right post to score the Blue's second goal. Junior Celena Dopart answered for the Engineers by putting in a goal off an assist from senior Meghan Linskey. WPI's goal ended the first half with a score of 2-1.

In the second half Lewis knocked in three goals. For the fifth goal Lewis inserted a penalty corner to senior Kate Cushing at the top of the circle who passed it back to Lewis for the goal. A few minutes later Cushing scored the final goal for the Blue off a penalty corner insertion from Lewis.

Wellesley had control of the ball for most of the game, out shooting WPI 25 to 2.

Senior goalkeeper Sarina Sawyer had one save in the game for the Blue, while first year goalkeeper Liz Dufresne had seven saves in net for WPI. The Engineers also got defensive saves from junior Caitlin Kelley and sophomore Madison Shugrue.

The Blue are back in action on Tuesday at 4:00 pm, traveling to Endicott College. The Engineers will travel to Simmons College on Wednesday for a 7:00 pm game.

Before the game, Wellesley honored the six members of the Class of 2011:

Kate Cushing, a history major from Danvers, MA
Katie Frett, a political science and French major from Hallowell, ME
Alison Mehan, a psychology major from Stamford, CT
Sarina Sawyer, a Spanish and environmental studies major from Wilmette, IL
Sally Scudder, a political science major from Delafield, WI
Sarah Mohtes-Chan, a psychology major from Davis, CA

Individually, Frett is a three-time All-Region player, as well as a three-time NEWMAC All-Conference honoree.  She was also named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in 2007.  Cushing also has an All-Region honor to her name, and she was named to the 2009 NEWMAC All-Conference team. Rounding out the individual honors, Mohtes-Chan was named to the Seven Sisters All-Tournament team in 2009.

The class of 2011 has led the Wellesley field hockey team for four very successful seasons.  In their tenure, these seniors have amassed an overall record of 42-29.  The have appeared in two NEWMAC Championship games, and last season finished as the NEWMAC regular season champions.
