Field Hockey Blanks Union, 3-0

SCHENECTADY, NY – Wellesley's Emily Lewis scored twice and Allison Robbins added a goal to lead the Blue (1-0) to a 3-0 win over Union (0-1) in the season opener for both teams at Frank Bailey Field.

The Wellesley victory marked the first career head coaching win for the Blue's Julia King.

Robbins opened up the scoring for Wellesley with a goal from straightaway, 8:37 into the first half. Later in the stanze, Lewis scored her first of the contest, taking a short pass in front of the net from Lallie Lukens and firing a shot past McCune at the 23:15 mark to give Wellesley a 2-0 lead at the half.

Early in the second half, Lewis added her second of the contest, taking a deflected pass and firing a low shot from ten yards out into the corner of the net for a 3-0 Wellesley lead at the 8:43 mark.

Union carried the play for the remainder of the contest, outshooting Wellesley 8-7 the rest of the way, but the Dutchwomen were unable to break through for a goal.

For the game, Wellesley outshot Union 20-13, and held a 13-4 advantage on penalty corners.

Wellesley's Brit Mscisz (two saves) and Becky Hamilton (three saves) combined for the shutout victory in net. 

Union goaltender Mary McCune made seven saves in her second career start and junior forward Caroline Moran led Union with six shots.

The Dutchwomen will take on Montclair State on Sept. 7 at 7:00 p.m. in their next contest. Wellesley will travel to Gordon College this Saturday, for a 11:00am start.
