Babson Upends Blue Field Hockey in NEWMAC Tournament

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Babson sophomore Morgan Lockwood scored in the 62nd minute to lead the #6 Beavers field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over #3 Wellesley in the first round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament on Wednesday afternoon in Wellesley.

Lockwood's late tally broke a 0-0 scoreless tie, sending Babson (9-11) to the semifinals to face #2 Mount Holyoke on Saturday at MIT. Wellesley finishes the 2011 campaign with a 10-9 record.

Wellesley dominated much of the game, finishing with a 22-8 advantage in shots and a commanding 14-4 lead in corner opportunities. Babson, however, made the most of their 62nd minute corner, as first-year Caroline Malone controlled a loose ball on the right side of the cage and fed it to Lockwood who tapped it in for the game-winning score.

Babson senior keeper Jess Pashos earned the hard-fought win, facing 22 shots and coming up with nine saves, six in the second half. For Wellesley, sophomore Brit Mscisz ended the contest with four total stops.

Leading the offense for the Blue, junior Emily Lewis recorded seven total shots, while classmate Allison Robbins tallied five.

Wellesley sees its 2011 campaign come to a close with a 10-9 overall record under first-year head coach Julia King. The Blue ended the NEWMAC regular season in third place with a 5-3 record, just one year after failing to qualify for the playoffs with a 3-5 conference mark.

Babson will take on Mount Holyoke in Saturday's semifinal which begins at 2:00pm on the campus of MIT. The Beavers will look to avenge a 5-0 regular season loss to the Lyons.
