Kirkaldy Named NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Week

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Wellesley College sophomore Kaitlyn Kirkaldy was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending November 1st.

Kirkaldy lead the Blue's defense last week, spearheading an effort that did not allow a goal. In a 3-0 win against UMass-Dartmouth, the sophomore led a side that only allowed four total shots, none in the first half. Wrapping up the week in a 5-0 win over Clark, Kirkaldy marked the Cougar's top offensive threat, not allowing a goal from the league's leading scorer, while adding a defensive save in the shutout victory.

Wellesley field hockey saw its 2011 campaign come to a close with a 10-9 overall record under first-year head coach Julia King. The Blue ended the NEWMAC regular season in third place with a 5-3 record, just one year after failing to qualify for the playoffs with a 3-5 conference mark.

Because of a late regular season contest finished on Tuesday, last week's Player of the Week selections were announced today.
