Blue Field Hockey Players Earn All-Conference Honors; Gruet Named Rookie of the Year

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College field hockey team was honored by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference with several post-season awards, as voted on by the league's coaches. First-year Nathalie Gruet highlighted the awards, taking home Rookie of the Year honors, while Wellesley placed Gruet, Whitney Reid and Emily Lewis on the All-Conference team.

Gruet, an Acton, Mass. native, earns NEWMAC Rookie of the Year accolades while representing Wellesley on the All-NEWMAC first-team. Wellesley's leading scorer, she racked up 28 points on 12 goals and four assists as a midfielder. Gruet shined against NEWMAC opponents, racking up 18 points in conference game, ranking her fourth overall. The rookie ended the season with three game-winning goals, while adding a defensive save.

Reid, a native of Bensalem, Pa., earns her first All-Conference award, garnering second-team honors. The senior compiled 14 points on five goals and four assists, after missing much of her junior season with an injury. Reid ended her career in Blue with 16 goals and 18 assists for a total of 50 points.

Lewis, hailing from Weston, Conn., is a first-time All-Conference honoree, earning a second-team nod. Wellesley's second leading scorer, she recorded 11 goals and two assists this season for a total of 24 points. Lewis recorded a team-leading 76 shots this season, while scoring two game-winning goals.

In addition to the individual awards, Wellesley was honored with the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award. Voted upon by the league's student-athletes, the award recognizes the team that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct.

Wellesley field hockey ended the 2011 campaign with a 10-9 overall record under first-year head coach Julia King. The Blue ended the NEWMAC regular season in third place with a 5-3 record, just one year after failing to qualify for the playoffs with a 3-5 conference mark.
