Reid, Lewis, Gruet Named Field Hockey All-Region
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Three Wellesley College field hockey players were honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) with All-Region selections. Representing the Blue on the New England East second team were senior Whitney Reid, junior Emily Lewis and first-year Nathalie Gruet.
NEWMAC Champion MIT led the All-Region team with six selections, while runner-up and ECAC Champion Mount Holyoke, added five. Wellesley's three selections ranked the Blue third among NEWMAC teams.
Reid, a native of Bensalem, Pa., compiled 14 points on five goals and four assists, after missing much of her junior season with an injury. She ends her career in Blue with 16 goals and 18 assists for a total of 50 points.
Lewis, hailing from Weston, Conn., was the Blue's second leading scorer this season. She recorded 12 goals and two assists, for a total of 26 points. Lewis also racked up a team-leading 76 shots, while scoring two game-winning goals.
Gruet, an Acton, Mass. native, racked up 28 points on 12 goals and four assists as a midfielder. The 2011 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year ended the season with three game-winning goals, while adding a defensive save.
All three Wellesley players earned their first All-Region selection.
Wellesley field hockey ended the 2011 campaign with a 10-9 overall record under first-year head coach Julia King. The Blue ended the NEWMAC regular season in third place with a 5-3 record, just one year after failing to qualify for the playoffs with a 3-5 conference mark.
