Lewis Scores Twice as Wellesley Field Hockey Shuts Out Union

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College field hockey team opened the 2012 season with a commanding 4-0 win over Union College at home on Saturday. The Blue out-shot the Dutchwomen 15-5 in the victory.

Emily Lewis found the back of the cage twice for the Blue, while Hannah Flesch made an immediate impact in her collegiate debut, recording a goal and an assist. Allison Robbins accounted for Wellesley's other score.

Defensively, Brit Mscisz and Becky Hamilton split time in goal, with both keepers remaining largely untested.

Union's Nicole Merigliano was the Dutchwomen's most active player in the circle, recording two shots on the afternoon. In net for the visitors, Molly McCune picked up six saves, facing 10 shots on goal.

The game was close through the early going, with Robbins breaking a scoreless tie in the 22nd minute, converting a penalty corner. Kaitlyn Kirkaldy started the corner, lacing a pass to Robbins on the left side.

Lewis made it 2-0 Blue, converting a rebound in the 30th minute. Flesch picked up the initial shot, but was denied by McCune. Lewis collected the rebound in front of the cage and sent it through for her first score of the contest.

Wellesley added two second half goals to complete the victory. Flesch scored in the 45th minute after a brilliant run from Lewis and Lukens brought the ball up field. Lukens then found Flesch, who broke through on the right side and tapped it in for the score. Lewis later added her second goal of the game on an assist from Flesch in the 47th minute.

Union's best chance to score came in the 58th minute as Trista Johnson's shot got behind the Blue keeper. However, Wellesley's Meghan Peterson was there to preserve the Blue shutout.

Wellesley is back in action on Wednesday, hosting New England College at 4:30pm. Union next plays on Saturday, September 8th, hosting WPI at 1:00pm.
