Gruet’s Three Tallies Lead Wellesley Field Hockey Over Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – Three goals from sophomore Nathalie Gruet lifted the Wellesley College field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Ithaca College on the road at Higgens Stadium on Saturday morning. The win improved the Blue to 3-0, while the Bombers suffered their first loss, dropping to 3-1.

Gruet, Wellesley's leading scorer a year ago, recorded the first three goals of her season, including the game-winner in the 60th minute.

Wellesley took the early lead, as Gruet scored just 3:45 in the contest. Ithaca equalized just a minute later, as Lindsay Flanagan scored off of a rebound to knot the game at 1-1.

Gruet put Wellesley up 2-1 in the 27th-minute with a tally off of an assist from Hannah Flesch. Once again, though, Ithaca responded, tying the game just four minutes later, as Katelyn Gualtieri made it 2-2 heading into the break.

The second half was quiet until the 60th minute, when Gruet scored the game winner, her third goal of the contest. Allison Robbins launched the initial shot, but it was saved by the Ithaca keeper. Gruet then collected the rebound and put Wellesley up 3-2.

Ithaca made a bid to tie the contest in the final minute of the game, but Brit Mscisz stopped Katie Kennedy's attempt to seal the Wellesley victory.

Msisz finished the contest with seven saves for the Blue, while Ithaca goalkeeper Kelly Singleton made eight stops.

Wellesley is back in action on Wednesday, hosting Wesleyan at 4:30pm. Ithaca will next take on nationally-ranked Cortland, Wednesday at 4:00pm.
