Field Hockey Overpowers Smith on Homecoming

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Senior Emily Lewis scored three times while sophomore Lallie Lukens scored twice, as the Wellesley College field hockey team grabbed a 6-1 win over Smith College in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. The Homecoming win gives the Blue a 7-2 overall record, with a 2-0 mark in the NEWMAC. Smith dips to 4-5 overall, 0-3 in conference play.

Lewis recorded three goals and an assist for seven points, while Lukens added a pair of goals. First-year Hannah Flesch picked up three assists, while sophomore Meghan Peterson picked up a goal and an assist in the win.

Smith's lone score came off the stick of Jenny Estes, who put the Pioneers on the board in the 66th minute.

Wellesley controlled the game early, needing just over five minutes to take a 1-0 lead. Lewis scored off of a pass from Peterson on a corner for the advantage. Ten minutes later, Lukens used an acrobatic move to tap in a ball from Flesh, giving Wellesley a 2-0 lead. Lewis rounded out the first half scoring on an assist from Flesch, setting the score to 3-0 at the break.

The Blue started the second half much like the first, as a quick goal from Lukens made it 4-0. Lewis completed her hat trick in the 49th minute, while Peterson tallied in the 51st minute, making it 6-0 Wellesley.

Smith finally broke through with 4:16 to play when Estes carried a ball upfield and found the back of the cage for her third goal of the season.

Wellesley junior Brit Mscisz picked up the win in goal for the Blue, recording two saves. Sophomore Becky Hamilton played 19 minutes, making four stops. Senior Maddie Whitaker added a defensive save for Wellesley.

For Smith, Abbey Fleming suffered the loss, making four saves in 51 minutes of play.  Nora Demick played the final 19, posting three stops.

Wellesley continues its homestand on Tuesday, facing off against NEWMAC-rival, MIT, at 4:00pm. Smith returns home on Wednesday, hosting Daniel Webster at 4:00pm.
