Nationally-Ranked Trinity Edges Blue Field Hockey, 2-1

HARTFORD, Conn. – #16 Trinity College used two second half goals to top the Wellesley College field hockey team, 2-1, on Thursday evening in a steady downpour on Sheppard Field.

Trinity, ranked No. 16 in the nation, improves to 8-1 with its third straight win, while the Blue see their season mark fall to 7-4.

Wellesley scored the first goal of the contest 17 minutes into play. Sophomore Nathalie Gruet scored off of a feed from first-year Hannah Flesch, converting a penalty corner opportunity into a 1-0 lead that would hold into the break. 

Early in the second half, Bantam rookie Olivia Tapsall netted in a rebound off her own initial shot to tie the game at 1-1.  Just under three minutes later, Trinity junior Sarah Duncan fed senior Haley Thompson as she scored the game winner in the 43rd minute. 

Wellesley was unable to tally the equalizer, dropping their second straight contest.

Wellesley junior Brit Mscisz was solid in goal, stopping 12 shots including one against Bantam first-year Nikki Rivera on a one-on-one chance for Trinity to tie the score in the first half.

Trinity junior goalie Anne Marie Scalambrino needed just one save to earn the victory. The Bantams outshot the Blue, 24-3, and held a 12-3 edge on penalty corners.

Wellesley returns to the field on Saturday, hosting NEWMAC foe Clark at 12:00pm. Trinity next plays on October 9th, hosting UMass.-Dartmouth at 7:00pm.
