Wellesley Field Hockey Falls to Babson, 3-2
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College sophomore Caroline Malone scored the second of her two goals 13:16 into the second half to help lift the Beavers to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over visiting Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Tuesday night at MacDowell Field.
Babson moved to 11-4 overall with the win and stayed perfect in the NEWMAC at 6-0. Wellesley dropped to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play with the loss.
Wellesley came right back though, tying the game just 1:52 later as sophomore Nathalie Gruet redirected a hard shot by senior Allison Robbins following a penalty corner for a 1-1 deadlock just 6:59 into the game. The tally was the first given up by the Beavers to a NEWMAC opponent in nearly a month dating back to their conference-opener against MIT on September 15.
Following the early flurry both defenses settled in for the remainder of a first half in which scoring chances were at a premium. The Blue, who held a 4-2 advantage in shots after 35 minutes, took their first lead of the night at the 25:43 mark when sophomore Meghan Peterson hit a 15 yard blast off a penalty corner from junior Kaitlyn Kirkaldy for a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.
The Beavers wasted little time finding the equalizer as Julia Pochini knocked home her fifth goal of the season with a hard blast from 10 yards out off a centering pass from Lockwood to level the score just 2:39 into the second half. Just over a minute later Pochini nearly put Babson back ahead but her shot off a penalty corner insert from senior Kelly Walsh deflected off the left post and out of danger.
Despite getting outshot 10-3 over the final 35 minutes, Wellesley came up with two great chances in the game's final 20 minutes only to be stymied by Babson junior goalkeeper Kayla Florence on both opportunities. Florence made a pad-save on a tipped shot by Wellesley's Anissa Sridhar following a Peterson blast off a restart at 51:21, before making the stop of the game, a kick-save, sprawling to her left to deny Peterson's rocket from the top of the arc following a corner at 59:13.
Both Florence and Wellesley Brit Mscisz made three saves in a game that featured only 19 shots between the two teams.
Both teams will continue NEWMAC play on the road this weekend as Wellesley heads to Springfield in a 1 p.m. start while Babson will travel to face Wheaton in a 1:30 p.m. start.
