Gruet, Flesch Score as Field Hockey Tops WPI

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Two first half goals proved to be the difference as the Wellesley College field hockey team topped WPI, 2-0, in a NEWMAC clash on a humid Saturday afternoon in Wellesley. The victory lifts the Blue to 10-6 overall, 5-2 in conference play. WPI dips to 5-10, 2-6 in the NEWMAC.

Wellesley held a 21-6 advantage in shots, while racking up a 12-2 lead in penalty corners. However, strong play from WPI keeper Liz Dufresne kept the Blue scoring in check, allowing just the two first half goals.

The hosts wasted little time getting on the board to open the game. Just over four minutes into play, the Blue's Hannah Flesch fired a hard shot into the right side of the cage, putting Wellesley on top, 1-0.

Seven minutes later, the Blue made it 2-0 on a tip in from Nathalie Gruet. Gruet redirected a shot from Meghan Peterson after a penalty corner for the tally.

WPI had their best opportunity to score late in the first half, as the Engineers rattled off four shots and a penalty corner in the final two minutes. Kara McClusky had two shots during the stretch, with her second being saved by Wellesley keeper, Brit Mscisz, who ended the WPI threat.

Neither team found the back of the cage in the second half, with Wellesley holding WPI to just one attempt, sealing the shut out victory.

Dufresne made five stops in the loss for the visitors, while also being aided by defensive saves from Madison Shugrue and Becca Sharpe. Mscisz picked up the shut out win for Wellesley, with two saves.

WPI next plays on Tuesday, traveling to Simmons for a 6:30pm game. The Blue are back in action on Wednesday, hosting UMass-Dartmouth at 4:00pm.
