Wellesley Field Hockey Earns Several NEWMAC Awards

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College field hockey team was well represented on the list of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) post-season awards announced on Tuesday. The Blue placed three on the all-conference team, earned Rookie of the Year honors and won the annual Sportsmanship Award.

Wellesley senior Emily Lewis and sophomore Nathalie Gruet earned All-Conference honors, while first-year Hannah Flesch was named the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, also earning all-conference.

Lewis, from Weston, Connecticut, earns first-team All-NEWMAC honors, a year after being named to the second team. Wellesley's leading scorer with 31 points on 15 goals and one assist, she has recorded four game-winning goals this season. Playing center forward, Lewis was also valuable in Wellesley's transition game this season, using great vision and passing abilities to add to her offensive production. A four-year starter for the Blue, she will graduate with 40 goals and 11 assists for a total of 91 career points.

Gruet, hailing from Acton, Massachusetts, earns her second first-team All-NEWMAC selection. Last season's NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, she is one of Wellesley's go-to players, contributing heavily on both offense and defense. Gruet finished second on Wellesley in scoring, recording 27 points on 13 goals and one assist, while also adding three game-winners. As Wellesley's center midfielder, she combined tight and fast stick skills with great field sense and distribution abilities.

Flesch, a native of Rockville, Maryland, made an immediate impact in her first year of collegiate field hockey. A fast player with tremendous stick skills, she was first on Wellesley in assists, while also ranking in the top-five in the NEWMAC in the category. Flesch finished the season with 17 total points on four goals and nine assists. She becomes the second straight Rookie of the Year honoree for the Blue, and the fifth overall Wellesley honoree.

In addition to the individual awards, Wellesley was honored with the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award. Voted upon by the league's student-athletes, the award recognizes the team that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct. This is the second-straight season that Wellesley's team, guided by head coach Julia King, has won the award.

The Wellesley College field hockey team finished the 2012 season with a 12-8 overall record, advancing to the NEWMAC semifinals before falling to eventual NEWMAC champion, MIT.
