Wellesley Field Hockey Set Back by Williams College 7-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Seven different Ephs scored as the Blue were downed 7-0 by Williams College in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at Butler Stadium.

The Blue did not put up a single shot in the game and allowed 22 shots on goal for Williams College. It marked the first loss of the season for Wellesley, who fall to 2-1 overall and remain 1-0 in New England Men's and Womens' Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. Williams improves to 5-1 overall and stays at 1-1 in the NESCAC.

Williams opened up the first quarter scoring five goals on the Blue. The first came from junior Shea Van Den Broek (Darien, Conn.), her seventh goal of the year, and assisted by Liz Welch (Winchester, Mass.). Following the first goal, Emily Batchelor (Sherborn, Mass.), Molly Hellman (Darien, Conn.), and Catherine Torres (Madison, N.J.) each scored unassisted goals to give Williams a 4-0 advantage. To round out the first quarter scoring, Kaela Smith (Rye, N.Y.) found the back of the goal on a pass from Kelly McCarthy (Duxbury, Mass.).

Wellesley picked up its defense in the second quarter, keeping the score at 5-0. Goalkeeper Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newton, Pa.) recorded three saves in the period and 15 overall. 

In the second half, the Ephs added two more goals to the total. Sophomore Peyton Ahola (Sherborn, Mass.) tacked on an unassisted goal in the third period. In the fourth, Maycie Blair (Cantonsville, Md.) netted the final goal. For the Blue, junior Eleanor Rothera (Lusby, Md.) saw her first action of the season in goal. She finished with two saves and one goal allowed in the final quarter. 

Wellesley will head on the road Wednesday, September 22, for a 7:00 PM non-conference matchup at Bowdoin. Clark will head back home for a NESCAC matchup versus Trinity College (Conn.) on Saturday, September 25, at noon.
