Field Hockey Falls 4-0 on the Road to Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine. -- Bailey Prete (Avon, Conn.) put up two goals for Bowdoin as Wellesley fell 4-0 to the Polar Bears on Wednesday night in Brunswick, Maine.

For the second game in a row, the Blue did not get up a shot while allowing 22 shots on goal for Bowdoin. Wellesley drops its second consecutive game and falls to 2-2 overall, but stand at 1-0 in New England Men's and Womens' Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. With the win, Bowdoin improves to 3-2 overall.

Bowdoin set the pace early, firing two shots on goal within the first two minutes of the contest, but keeper Kyra-Deehr Lewis (Newtown, Pa.) made both saves. Eventually the pressure was too much for the Blue, as Prete scored the first goal of the game and gave the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead.

Bowdoin tacked on two more goals in the second period, as Manveer Sandhu (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) scored the first off a dish from Faith Jennings (Ghent, N.Y.). The second goal was netted by Bailey Prete and came unassisted. It was the second goal of the match for Bailey. Bowdoin took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Both teams played a solid defensive game in the third quarter, with neither giving up a goal. Deehr-Lewis recorded six saves for the Blue in the period. Bowdoin put the game away in the final quarter, after Olivia Cunningham (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored with less than 30 seconds remaining off an assist from Jill Cloonan (Woburn, Mass.).

Wellesley returns to NEWMAC play with a match at Wheaton on Friday, September 24, at 7:00 PM. Bowdoin will play Wesleyan on the road on Saturday, September 25, at 12:00 pm.
