NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Wellesley College field hockey was edged 1-0 by Smith in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday at Smith Turf Field.
Both teams took 14 shots while the Blue held a narrow 6-5 edge in penalty corners for the game.
Senior Victoria Mellow (San Diego, Calif.) scored the lone goal for the Pioneers (7-5 Overall, 4-1 NEWMAC) and sophomore Rory Harper (Wayne, Pa.) stopped 10 shots for Smith. Junior Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, Pa.) made eight saves for the Blue (5-7 Overall, 2-2 NEWMAC) while sophomore Rose Weseley (New York, N.Y.) put four shots on goal.
After a scoreless first half, Mellow finally found the back of the cage three minutes into the third quarter, giving Smith a 1-0 lead they never gave up.
The Blue return home after a four-game road stretch on Wednesday when they host Salve Regina at 6:00 PM. Smith travels to Western New England for a non-conference game with the Golden Bears at 7:00 PM.
