NORTON, Mass. – A late goal from first year Alex Butulis (Raleigh, N.C.) pushed Wellesley College field hockey past Wheaton in a 2-1 NEWMAC game on Sunday at Nordin Field.

Butulis' goal came off of a pass from junior Camille Newman (New York City, N.Y.) with less than five minutes remaining in the contest to break up a 1-1 tie and help the Blue (4-2 Overall, 1-0 NEWMAC) earn a win in the team's NEWMAC season opener.

After a scoreless first half, the Lyons (3-3 Overall, 0-1 NEWMAC) got on the board in the third quarter with a goal from junior Macey Poitras-Cote (Northborough, Mass.) that was set up by a pass from sophomore Mackenna Cooke (Old Saybrook, Conn.). Wellesley erased the Lyon's 1-0 lead four minutes later when senior River Schiff (Potomac, Md.) found the back of the cage. Newman assisted on the play.

The offense was even between the two teams, with Wellesley attempting just one more shot (18) than Wheaton (17). The Lyons took nine penalty corners to the Blue's seven. Wellesley senior goalie Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, Pa.) had a second straight game with double-digit saves, stopping 11 shots for the Blue. Wheaton keeper Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) made seven saves.

Wellesley hits the road for a non-conference game against Bowdoin on Tuesday, September 19 at 6:00 PM. The Lyons travel to Worcester State for a non-conference game on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
