Springfield Wins Shootout over Blue Field Hockey in 2-1 Game

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield outshot Wellesley College field hockey 4-3 in a penalty shootout to earn a 2-1 NEWMAC victory on Saturday at Stagg Field.

Junior Camille Newman (New York, N.Y.) and first years Alex Butulis (Raleigh, N.C.) and Katie Golla (Oak Park, Ill.) converted for the Blue (7-5 Overall, 3-2 NEWMAC) in the shootout, while Bardellini and junior Molly Collins (Franklin, Mass.) helped the Pride (4-7 Overall, 1-4 NEWMAC) tie the shootout at 3-3.

After a missed shot by Wellesley in the fifth round of the shootout, first year Samara Skully (East Rochester, N.Y.) found the back of the cage to give Springfield the victory.

Senior Cassidy Novello (Scotch Plains, N.J.) put the Blue on the scoreboard late in the first quarter with an 11th career goal.

Early in the second quarter, graduate student Kaitlin Bardellini (Northfield, N.H.) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season for the Pride to tie the game up at 1-1.

Wellesley outshot Springfield 18-16 while the Pride took four more penalty corners (10) than the Blue (6). Springfield senior Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) sent back 10 shots and Wellesley goalie Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, Pa.) recorded nine saves.

Wellesley travels to Endicott for a non-conference game at Endicott on Tuesday, October 10 at 7:00 PM while Springfield hosts Albertus Magnus at 7:00 PM on the same day.
