WPI Bests Blue Field Hockey on Senior Day, 3-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey finished its regular season with a 3-1 loss against WPI on Saturday at Butler Stadium.

Prior to the game Wellesley acknowledged five seniors for their contributions to the Blue. The seniors honored were Alex Lenart (Princeton Junction, N.J.), Jocelyn Andrews (Malvern, Pa.), Cassidy Novello (Scotch Plains, N.J.), River Schiff (Potomac, Md.), and Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, Pa.).

Senior Abigail Rauch (Jackson, N.J.), and sophomores Eve Marineau (Greene, Maine) and Arie Lang (West Hartford, Conn.) each scored a goal for the Engineers (9-8 Overall, 7-2 NEWMAC).

First year Alex Butulis (Raleigh, N.C.) had the one goal for the Blue (8-9 Overall, 4-5 NEWMAC) when classmate Katie Golla (Oak Park, Ill.) drove past a defender into the circle and fired a shot that Butulis tipped into the cage.

Martineau broke the scoreless tie early in the second quarter on a shot from the top of the arc setup by a penalty insert from junior Eliza Dotson (Woodstock, Conn.). 

A pass from junior Maggie McCarthy (Worcester, Mass.) set up Lang to slap a shot that doubled the Engineers' lead. Only a minute later, Butulis scored for the Blue to bring the WPI lead back down to one.

After another minute, WPI found the back of the cage again, this time courtesy of Rauch, who came out of a scramble with the ball and gave the Engineers a 3-1 lead that would remain through the final horn.

WPI outshot Wellesley 22-17. The Engineers took 14 penalty corners while the Blue had 13 penalty corners of its own. WPI junior Ella Moreau (Huntington, Mass.) stopped eight shots and senior Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, Pa.) made seven saves for Wellesley.

Wellesley will now await the release of the NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship Bracket to find out its opponent for the First Round on Tuesday, October 31st at a time to be determined.
