Wellesley, Tufts Softball Split a Pair in the Rain

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College softball team split a pair of games against local rival Tufts University, on a rainy Tuesday afternoon in Wellesley. The hosts took game one, 8-5, but the Jumbos won the nightcap, 6-2.

The split sets Wellesley's season ledger to 11-7, while Tufts moves to 12-9.

Game one started in a steady rain with both pitchers struggling. Tufts opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first, as Jo Clair hammered a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence to give the Jumbos the early advantage. Wellesley answered with two in the bottom half of the inning, as a Mara Blesoff sacrifice fly and a Sinta Cebrian double each plated a run.

Tufts stretched their lead to 5-2 in the second as a Lena Cantone single scored a pair of runs.

After the second inning, Wellesley hurler Lauren Goldfarb settled in and held the Jumbos scoreless for the rest of the affair. In the first two innings, the sophomore gave up five runs on three hits with six walks, but from the third inning on, she turned things around, allowing only two more hits, with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Meanwhile, the Blue bats came alive as Wellesley pounded out 10 more hits and six runs over the final five innings of play to earn the come-from-behind, 8-5 victory. Goldfarb was also the star at the plate, finishing the game 4-4 with three doubles and an RBI. Cebrian finished 2-4 with two RBI, while Samantha Spiga drove in a pair of runs with two hits.

For Tufts, Clair led all players with three RBI, while Cantone went 2-3 with two RBI. In the circle, Rebecca DiBiase suffered the loss, throwing six innings allowing eight runs on 14 hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Wellesley's Goldfarb earned the win with her final line showing seven innings, five runs, four earned, on five hits. She struck out eight and walked six.

Game two featured timely hitting and solid pitching from Tufts as the Jumbos earned the split with a 6-2 victory.

Once again, the visitors struck first as Tufts plated four in the top of the second. After three infield singles loaded the bases, Sarah Hedtler lined a single up the middle and Clair knocked a deep double to give the Jumbos a 4-0 lead.

Wellesley got two back with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second. Singles from Spiga and Kimberly Cabral put two on before Goldfarb doubled in a run, and Megan Townsend drove in another with a perfectly placed infield single.

4-2 was as close as Wellesley would get, as Tufts starter Izzie Santone held the Blue to just two hits over the final five innings of play. The Jumbos tacked two more on in the top of the seventh as Chrissie Massrey hit a two-run homerun to make it 6-2.

Santone got the win for Tufts, throwing seven innings while allowing two runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts. At the plate, Hedtler, Clair and Massrey each drove in two runs, while Lizzy Iuppa collected two hits from the leadoff spot.

Wellesley's Sarah Schwartzmeyer suffered the loss, allowing six runs, all earned, on nine hits with four walks and six strikeouts. At the plate, Townsend picked up a two-hit game.

The Blue are back in action tomorrow with another non-conference doubleheader as Wellesley hosts Framingham State at 3:00pm. Tufts will next play at Brandeis on April 10th beginning at 12:00pm.
