Wellesley Softball Drops a Pair in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wellesley College softball team dropped a pair of games on day two of their spring training trip at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. The Blue dip to 1-3 with the losses, falling 6-4 to Manchester University, and 10-4 to Wisconsin Eau-Claire.

Wellesley opened the day with a tight 6-4 loss to Manchester. The Blue got in trouble early, allowing the Spartans to take a 5-0 lead after three innings of play.

Wellesley chipped away, however, adding a run in the fourth off of a Mara Blesoff single, and a run in the sixth on a Mariah Philips single, that made it 5-2.

Manchester stretched their lead to 6-2 with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Again, Wellesley fought back, scoring for two runs in the top of the seventh before a hard-hit line-out ended the rally. The Blue got their seventh inning runs from another Blesoff single and a RBI infield hit from Lauren Goldfarb.

Blesoff, Goldfarb and Philips all collected two hits each to pace the Wellesley offense.

In the nightcap, Wellesley hung tough with the 5-0 Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds before a sloppy seventh inning doomed the Blue.

Wellesley held a 3-1 lead after three innings of play. Singles from Maria LaBouyer and Emilyrose Havrilla drove in runs, while Kimberly Cabral scored the third run on heads up baserunning.

Eau-Claire battled back to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning, but Wellesley got it back in the bottom of the inning, as Jayne Ellis scored on an error.

Again, the Blugolds came back to tie it. This time on a triple in the top of the fifth that made it 4-4.

The 4-4 score held into the top of the seventh when Eau-Claire exploded for six runs, setting the final to 10-6.

Wellesley's Ellis had a three-hit night, while Goldfarb added a pair of hits. Havrilla and MaBouyer both drove in runs in the losing effort.

The Blue will get right back to play with a pair of early games tomorrow morning. Wellesley opens with a 9:00am game against Framingham State and will play Bowdoin at 11:00am.
