Blue Softball Downs Framingham State and Bowdoin in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wellesley College softball team picked up two wins on day three of their spring trip to the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. The Blue opened the day with a 3-0 win over Framingham State and then made it two-for-two with a 4-1 victory over Bowdoin in the nightcap.

The wins even Wellesley's season mark to 3-3 overall.

Although Wellesley and Framingham State are just nine miles apart, the teams traveled over 1,200 miles to meet in this morning's match-up. The Blue used a strong pitching performance from junior Lindsay Johnson and clutch hitting from sophomore Emilyrose Havrilla and senior Lauren Goldfarb to earn the victory over their local rival.

Wellesley opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Goldfarb laced a double to center that scored first-year Jaclyn Tsang. The Blue increased their lead with a pair of runs in the fourth, as a Havrilla double scored junior Jayne Ellis and Goldfarb.

Three runs was all Wellesley would need as Johnson mowed through the Framingham State line-up. She ended the morning with a career-high 13-strikeouts, completing the shutout in seven innings. Johnson allowed just two hits and two walks, picking up her first victory of the season.

In the second game of the day, Wellesley got another strong pitching performance, this time from Sarah Schwartzmeyer, as the senior led the Blue to a 4-1 victory over Bowdoin.

The Polar Bears struck first in the game, scoring on a Wellesley miscue in the first inning. From that point on, though, Schwartzmeyer shut them down. She went the distance, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out four against a potent Polar Bear line-up.

Wellesley evened the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning. Three straight one-out singles from Havrilla, sophomore Maria LaBouyer and Tsang loaded the bases, before a Goldfarb sacrifice fly scored Havrilla. The Blue then stretched the lead to 2-1 in the sixth, when a Havrilla single scored senior Kimberly Cabral.

Wellesley got a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, stretching their lead to 4-1. An Ellis single to center plated the first run, while an RBI single from Cabral drove in pinch runner first-year Carly Bresee for the fourth Blue run of the game.

Schwartzmeyer and the Wellesley defense then shut down Bowdoin in the bottom half of the seventh to seal the victory.

The Blue will have a much-needed off day tomorrow before returning to play with two games on Thursday morning.
