Wellesley Softball Splits Against Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Wellesley College softball team split a NEWMAC double-header against Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon. The Blue took the first game 13-4 in five innings, but couldn't complete a late comeback in game two, falling 6-5.

Wellesley moves to 7-6 overall, 1-2 in the NEWMAC, while Coast Guard improves to 10-8 overall, 3-3 in conference play.

Wellesley had 14 hits in the game one win and also took advantage of four Coast Guard errors which led to ten unearned runs in the opener. Senior Lauren Goldfarb's RBI single in the first gave the Blue a 1-0 lead before they added four more in the third with junior Jayne Ellis delivering and RBI triple, sophomore Emilyrose Havrilla adding an RBI single while Wellesley also scored on an error and a wild pitch in the inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Coast Guard got on the board in the home half of the third as sophomore Erin Lisko doubled and scored on an RBI double by senior Holli Bastinck, who later came around on an error to cut the deficit to 5-2.

The Blue added three in the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by first-year Carly Bresee and sophomore Abby Casey before a run scored on an error to push the lead to 8-2.

Wellesley put the game away with five runs in the fifth with the big hits being a two-run single by Casey and a two-run double by Ellis for a 13-2 lead.

Coast Guard got two in the home half on a two-run homer by Bastinck, her first of the season, but it wasn't enough as the eight-run rule after five ended the game.

Senior Sarah Schwartzmeyer (4-1) went the distance and allowed seven hits and four runs -- three earned, while walking two and striking out three to get the win. Coast Guard's Kristine Kahl (5-4) was touched for 14 hits and 13 runs -- three earned, while walking three and striking out one as she took the loss for the Bears.

Six players had multiple hits for Wellesley in the opener with Ellis and Casey each driving in three runs while Bresee drove in a pair of runs in the win. Coast Guard's Bastinck had two hits and three RBI's while Lisko had a pair of hits in the opener.

In the nightcap, Coast Guard came out swinging and the first six hitters all singled to chase Wellesley starter Lindsay Johnson (1-4). Goldfarb came on and allowed two more hits as the Bears led 6-0.

In the first inning, eight of the first nine batters singled, senior Summer Dupler stole home as part of a double steal to get the Bears on the board, sophomore Jessie Richardson had an RBI single, senior Kaitlin Ward had a two-run single and junior Kelly Grills added an RBI single in the inning.

Wellesley had taken a brief a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Ellis.

Goldfarb kept the Bears scoreless the rest of the way scattering nine hits in 5 2/3 innings allowing just and unearned run in the first while finishing with two walks and two strikeouts pitching in and out of trouble in the second, as the Bears left the bases loaded and the third, when Coast Guard left two runners on.

The Blue got three in the fifth on RBI singles by Ellis and sophomore Maria LaBouyer and a sacrifice fly by senior Mara Blesoff to cut the lead to 6-4. Wellesley got one more in the sixth scoring a run on a throwing error.
