Blue Softball Downs Middlebury, Falls to Chicago to Open Season

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wellesley College softball team opened the 2014 season with a split on day one of the team's spring trip to Florida. The Blue opened the day with a big 14-3 victory over Middlebury, before falling 4-1 to the University of Chicago in the afternoon. Both games, and all of this week's games, are being played at the National Training Center in Clermont.

Wellesley's offense produced two big innings against Middlebury, as the Blue dispatched the Panthers 14-3 in just five innings. Wellesley scored seven runs in both the bottom of the first and the fourth innings, and held Middlebury to just three runs.

Each Wellesley starter knocked out a hit, led by three hits each from junior Emilyrose Havrilla and sophomore Jaclyn Tsang. Havrilla finished the game 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored, while Tsang was 3-for-4 with a doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored.

Also against Middlebury, senior Jayne Ellis and first-year Anna Pisac each recorded a pair of hits. Ellis recorded a double, an RBI and scored a pair, while Pisac led the Blue with three total RBI. 

Senior Jennifer Migliore and junior Abby Casey each contributed a pair of RBI in the win, while junior Mariah Philips and sophomore Carly Bresee also drove in runs for Wellesley.

Senior Lindsay Johnson picked up the win in the circle, throwing all five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits. She walked five and struck out three in the win.

Against the University of Chicago, Wellesley was held off the board until the sixth inning. Junior Maria LaBouyer scored the lone Wellesley run on an RBI  from Ellis in the inning. Havrilla and Bresee also added hits in the loss.

Wellesley is back in action tomorrow morning with another pair of games. The Blue will face Rochester Institute of Technology at 9:00am and then take on St. Thomas of Minnesota at 11:00am.
