Blue Softball Wins Two over Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. - Wellesley College softball won a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games over Clark at O'Brien Softball Field on Saturday. 

Sophomore Lauren Young (Fresno, Calif.) starred both at the plate and in the circle for the Blue (4-17-1 Overall, 2-6 NEWMAC). After throwing a complete game for the win in game one, before hitting two doubles with an RBI in game two. 

Junior Rebecca Mauro (Easton, Conn.) had a run and an RBI for Clark (4-25 Overall, 0-10 NEWMAC).

Young allowed just one hit while striking out six batters in a winning effort for the Blue in game one.

A fielding error allowed the Cougars to take an early 1-0 lead with Mauro scoring. The Blue tied the game back in the third when first year Chiara Lundin (Piedmont, Calif.) reached first on an error, scoring junior Elli DeCleene (North Reading, Mass.).

Wellesley put three runs on the board in the top of the sixth. Senior Marisa Sgambati (Scottsdale, Ariz.) started the scoring with an RBI single to left before an infield hit by sophomore Charis Chung (San Gabriel, Calif.) drove in a second run. An error by Clark later allowed Chung to score, bringing Wellesley's lead to 4-2.

Mauro singled in a run for Clark in the bottom of the sixth before Young shut the door with a strikeout to seal the game. 

Senior Jessica Sardilli (Farmington, Conn.) threw 5.1 innings one earned run for Clark. The Blue produced eight hits to Clark's one, with Sgambati and senior Ingrid Hsu (San Ramon, Calif.) both collecting two hits.

The Blue cruised to an 8-0 five inning victory in game two. First year Andrea Delgado (Miami, Fla.) finished the contest 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored while first year Emeline Gaunce (Los Altos, Calif.) added a pair of hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Blue. 

Sgambati limited the Cougars to three hits and struck out three over five innings of work to earn her first win (1-8) of the season. Sgambati also finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Nicole Buckley (Hazlet, N.J.) surrendered seven runs on eight hits to drop to 1-9 on the season for Clark. 

A bunt single off the bat of Delgado drove home Hsu from third for the first Wellesley run in the top of the first inning. Wellesley then added six runs on seven hits to take a commanding lead in the second inning. Eight straight batters reached base in the top of second with Delgado driving in a pair of runs to complete the string. With the Blue leading 5-0 with two outs in the inning, Gaunce doubled to left to make the score 7-0.

Lundin increased the Wellesley lead to 8-0 with an RBI double in the top of the fourth. Sgambati did the rest for the Blue, working quickly through the fourth inning before working around trouble in the fifth to secure the shutout.

The Blue will take on Dean at home next Wednesday with 3:00 & 5:00 PM games while Clark heads to Emerson next Friday for two NEWMAC games at 3:00 & 5:00 PM.
