NEW LONDON, Conn. –  Wellesley College softball dropped both games of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The Bears defeated the Blue, 10-5 in game one and 8-0 in game two.

Junior Lillia Farlow (Carrollton, Texas) had five RBIs and a home run for the Bears (24-8 Overall, 10-4 NEWMAC) while first year Maura Murphy (Bristow, Va.) cracked a home run in the second game. The Blue (8-19-1 Overall, 4-8 NEWMAC) were led by first year Maggie Abernethy (Phoenix, Ariz.) with a pair of RBIs in the first game.

Game 1 | Coast Guard 10, Wellesley 5 | Final

The Bears scored two runs in the first, two runs in the second and five runs in the third to take a 9-0 lead through three innings in the opener. Farlow finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, 3 RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while classmate Isabelle Shroyer (Marysville, Ohio) was 3-for-4 at the dish and pitched seven innings, striking out three and surrendering just one earned run.

Trailing 9-0, Wellesley scored four runs in the top of the fourth, benefiting from three Coast Guard errors in the inning to cut the deficit to 9-3. Junior Julz Vargas (Los Angeles, Calif. ) and sophomore Caris Chung (San Gabriel, Calif. ) each registered RBIs in the inning but the Blue left two runners stranded with a chance to cut further into the deficit.

Wellesley got one more run back in the top of the fifth when Chung ripped an RBI single to left with the bases loaded. Unfortunately the Blue left the bases full at the end of the inning when Shroyer got senior Ingrid Hsu (San Ramon, Calif.) to pop out to second. Chung finished game one 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for the Blue.

Farlow would put the game out of reach with a home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth, giving Coast Guard the 10-5 advantage.

Sophomore Lauren Young (Fresno, Calif ) went six innings in the circle in the loss for the Blue. Young also finished with a pair of hits and a run scored. Batterymate Abernethy added two hits and a pair of RBIs for Wellesley.

Game 2 | Coast Guard 8, Wellesley 0 | Final (5 Innings)

Murphy had a two-run homer and four total RBIs for the Bears while Farlow drove in two runs.

Murphy ripped a double to center field in the first to score two runs for the Bears in the bottom of the second.

Coast Guard scored two more runs in the third inning. Senior Selena Serna (San Diego, Calif.) drove in a run with a double to center before Farlow singled in another to give CGA a 4-0 lead.

Murphy's blast capped off a four-run fifth for the Bears. Farlow started the scoring by knocking in a run on a fielder's choice before first year Bridget Bartz (Arlington, Va.) hit a sacrifice fly to bring another runner home. Murphy would bring Farlow in with the home run, finishing the game with the Bears up 8-0.

First year Dana Walker (Macon, Ga.) only allowed two hits over five innings for the Bears while Wellesley senior Marisa Sgambati (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and sophomore Kate Liston (Boulder, Colo.) each struck out a batter.

Wellesley will host senior day against Emerson next Friday with a NEWMAC doubleheader at 3:00 & 5:00 PM. Coast Guard travels to Trinity (Conn.) on Wednesday for a pair of non-conference games at  3:00 & 5:00 PM.
