Blue Basketball Tops Edgewood, 58-45, at San Juan Shootout

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Senior Morgyne Weaver (Oklahoma City, Okla.) led all players with 18 points and junior Chelsi Scott (Portland, Mich.) added 15 points and 11 rebounds to lift Wellesley College basketball to a 58-45 victory over Edgewood College on day one of the D3 San Juan Shootout on Sunday afternoon at Mario 'Quijote' Morales Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico. 

Weaver added four rebounds and three assists to help the Blue improve to 3-5 overall on the season. Scott recorded her first double-double of the year, also adding a team-high three blocks and two steals. First year Kayla Jang (South Pasadena, Calif.) added seven points, six rebounds and a three assists for Wellesley, while senior Natalie Anderson (Bellevue, Wash.) also chipped in with seven points off the bench. 

Edgewood junior Rachel Pope (Dodgeville, Wis.) scored a team-high 16 points for the Eagles. Pope was joined in double-figures by senior Courtney Spangler (Walworth, Wis.), who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Sierra Jiran (Lodi, Wis.) added seven points and a game-high four steals off the bench as Edgewood dropped to 3-8 overall this year. 

Jiran knocked down a jumper at 12:10 of the first half to give the Eagles an early 11-10 advantage. Wellesley countered with a 6-0 run, as Weaver scored a pair of layups on either side of a layup from Scott to give the Blue a 16-11 lead midway through the first. 

A pair of buckets from Edgewood cut the Blue advantage to one, at 16-15, with 8:09 to play in the first but the Eagles would get no closer for the remainder of the contest. The Blue grew their first-half lead to seven points before eventually heading into the break with a 29-25 advantage. 

In the second half, a three-pointer from Pope brought the Eagles to within three, at 31-28, with 16:57 to play. Scott countered with a layup as the Blue outscored the Eagles 6-1 over the next seven minutes of play to take a 37-29 lead at 9:57 of the second. Pope then knocked down the first of two free throws at 7:38 to cut the Wellesley lead to five at 39-34. However, Wellesley outscored Edgewood 19-11 in the remainder of the contest to take the 58-45 victory. 

Wellesley will take on Suffolk University on day two of the D3 San Juan Shootout tomorrow at 12 noon EST. Edgewood will play Colby-Sawyer at 7:00 PM EST.
