Wellesley Basketball Drops 61-38 Game to Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball fell 61-38 to Brandeis on day one of the Judges Invitational at Red Auerbach Arena.

Sophomore Brooke Reed (Chantilly, Va.) scored 13 points on six-for-six shooting with eight rebounds to set the tone for the Judges (1-0 Overall). Grad student Francesca Marchese (Staten Island, N.Y.), sophomore Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass.), and first year Carlie Marrella (Ashland, Mass.) each had at least eight points.

Senior Jiyun Chae (Chantilly, Va.) and first year Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) both scored 12 points for the Blue (1-1 Overall). Barrow was the team-leader with eight rebounds and a pair of steals, while sophomore Yitzel Serna (Palmdale, Calif.) provided seven points and three assists for Wellesley.

The Judges went on a 14-2 run to begin the game and extended the lead to 25-6 after one quarter. Brandeis went five-for-10 from three point range in the first quarter.

Brandeis took a 42-14 lead into the half after outscoring the Blue 18-7 in the second quarter. The Judges outrebounded Wellesley 15-5 in the second and seven different players scored for Brandeis in the quarter.

The two teams exchanged baskets in the third quarter, with Wellesley outsourcing the Judges 12-9, including five points for the Blue from sophomore Yitzel Serna (Palmdale, Calif.). 

Neither team had a sizable advantage in the fourth quarter, with Brandeis never letting its lead drop below 20 as the Judges closed out a 61-38 game.

Brandeis went nine-for-30 (30%) from behind the arc while outrebounding Wellesley 59-36. The Blue committed fewer turnovers (12) than the Judges (20). 

Brandeis will face the winner of Kean/Oberlin tomorrow at 2:00 PM in the championship game of the Judges Invitational, and Wellesley will face the loser of Kean/Oberlin at 12:00 PM in the consolation game.
