Blue Basketball Stumbles Against Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. – 14 members of Babson College scored to give the Beavers a 80-51 NEWMAC victory over Wellesley College basketball at Staake Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Babson junior Katelyn Mollica (Foxborough, Mass.) put up 13 points and sophomore Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) scored 10 points with five rebounds.

Wellesley first year Mirella Funari (Phoenix, Ariz.) had a game-high 15 points and four steals. Junior Caitlin Windross (Eastvale, Calif.) and sophomore Yitzel Serna (Palmdale, Calif.) both finished in double figures. Windross pulled down eight rebounds and senior Jiyun Chae (Chantilly, Va.) earned three steals.

Babson led 14-9 seven minutes into the game. The Beavers finished the first quarter on a 9-2 run to make the score 23-11 after one quarter.

Three minutes into the second quarter Wellesley got five unanswered points from Funari to cut the deficit to four at 27-23. Babson got its lead back to 11 four minutes later with a pair of made three pointers. The Beavers' lead swelled to 18 by halftime.

Babson outscored Wellesley 15-10 in the third quarter to go up 23 after three frames and wrapped up an 80-51 victory with a 19-13 fourth quarter.

The Beavers shot 32-for-61 (52.5%) from the field with eight made threes and the Blue went 21-for-52 (40.4%). Babson won the battle of the boards 36-25 and scored 28 points in the paint.

Each team next competes on Saturday, February 3 at 1:00 PM. The Blue host Salve Regina and the Beavers are on the road at Wheaton.
