Wellesley Fencing Opens Season at the "Big One"

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College fencing team kicked off the 2010-11 season with a solid showing at the "Big One" meet at Smith College.

A total of thirteen Wellesley College fencers competed at the event.

Senior Hannah Braaten took 10th place in foil out of 82 participants. Ranking 11th in foil was senior Wendy Chin. Also placing in foil for Wellesley were senior Tess DeLean in 17th, first-year Jenny Mittleman in 26th, and sophomore Elise Dong in 56th.

In the epee competition, senior Ashley Paquin finished 13th out of 73. Coming in 33rd and 47th were seniors Taysir Mahmoud and Anne Benjamin.

In sabre, senior Elizabeth Rowen took 20th place out of 68 competitors. First-year Dania Wright placed 27th and was followed by junior Zsofia Schweger in 29th. Rounding out the finishes for Wellesley were sophomore Mariami Bekauri in 46th and first-year Xinyue Wu in 62nd.

Wellesley Fencing competes again on November 14th at the Vassar Invitational.
