Fencing Wins 2011 Wellesley Invitational
WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College fencing team notched a 4-0 record en route to the team title at the 2011 Wellesley Invitational. The Blue defeated teams from Smith, Dartmouth, Tufts and UMass for their third Invitational win of the season.
Behind Wellesley, Smith posted a 3-1 record to finish second, while Tufts took third (2-2), Dartmouth finished fourth (1-3) and UMass placed fifth (0-4).
The Blue opened the event with a 21-6 victory over Smith. The epee and foil squad each posted 8-1 victories, while the sabre team picked up a 5-4 win.
Next up was a 24-3 victory for Wellesley over UMass. Sabre led the way with an undefeated bout, going 9-0, while epee went 8-1 and foil went 7-2.
Wellesley's closest match of the day came against Tufts, where the Blue still came out on top, by a 19-8 score. Foil posted a perfect 9-0 score, while sabre won a tight match 5-4. The epee squad dropped a tough 5-4 match, which ended up as the only blemish on the Wellesley record.
The Blue closed out the tournament with a commanding 24-3 victory over Dartmouth to take the team title. Sabre posted their second 9-0 result on the day, while epee rebounded with an 8-1 edge, and foil won 7-2.
Individually, Ashley Paquin led the epee squad with a 12-0 mark, while Hannah Braaten finished 11-0 in foil. Wendy Chin recorded an 11-1 record in foil, while Elizabeth Rowen led the sabre squad with a 10-1 record.
Also for Wellesley, Dania Wright, went 9-3 in sabre, Tess DeLean posted a 7-3 record in foil and Courtney Collins (epee) and Zsofia Schweger (sabre) each went 6-3.
Other strong performers for Wellesley were Anne Benjamin (6-4), Taysir Mahmoud (3-1), Jenny Mittleman (2-0), and Xinyue Wu (2-0). Jacqueline Shen and Mariami Bekauri also picked up wins for the Blue.
Wellesley fencing will return to their home strip on Sunday, March 6th hosting the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season. Action begins at 8:00am.
