Blue Fencing Goes 4-2 at the Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Wellesley College fencing team competed well at the 2011 Vassar Invitational on Sunday. The Blue went 4-2 overall at the event, picking up wins against CCNY, Hunter, Fairleigh Dickinson and Yeshiva. Wellesley's only team losses came against Division-I Cornell, and Stevens Institute of Technology.

Wellesley's foil squad led the way with a 5-1 record at the event, with their only loss coming at the hands of Cornell. The squad swept their matches against FDU and Yeshiva, while posting an 8-1 win against CCNY and 6-3 wins against Hunter and Stevens. 

The Blue's sabre squad posted three wins at the event, and also were the only Wellesley weapon squad to grab wins over Cornell. The team posted a 7-2 win over Hunter, while winning 6-3 over Yeshiva and 5-4 over FDU. Rounding out the team scores, the epee team was highlighted by a 5-4 win over Hunter. 

Individually, first-year Carla The let the was with a 15-3 overall record competing in foil. Classmates Oleander Furman and Olivia Wei also fared well in foil, picking up totals of 12 and 11 wins. In sabre, senior Zsofia Schweger led the team with nine victories, while Dania Wright added eight. Competing in epee, first-year Kathryn Ledbetter recorded seven wins in the tournament.

Wellesley fencing is back in action on Saturday at UNH, traveling to the first Northeast Conference meet of the season.
