Wellesley Fencing Goes 2-0 at Home Invitational

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College fencing team went 2-0 at their home invitational, taking matches from Mount Holyoke and UMass. In the day's other dual, UMass topped Mount Holyoke to finish 1-1. The Blue now move to 8-7 on the season. 

Against Mount Holyoke, Wellesley won all three weapons to take the match, 20-7.

In foil, Carla The was 3-0 for the Blue, not allowing a touch against her. Oleander Furman was 2-1, while Olivia Wei added two wins and Zhang Kanwen picked up another. In epee, the Blue pulled out a narrow 5-4 decision. Kathryn Ledbetter and Amanda Hui were both 2-1 overall, while Elise Dong sealed the sweep with a win in the final round. The Blue then iced the sweep with a 7-2 in sabre. Mariami Bekauri was 3-0, while Dania Wright and Zsofia Schweger were both 2-1.

Against UMass, Wellesley came away with a 19-8 victory, winning two of the three weapons.

In foil, the Blue picked up an 8-1 victory, as The and Furman went 3-0, and Wei was 2-0. In sabre action, Wellesley picked up a 7-2 victory. Bekauri and Schweger each went 3-0, while Wright added two victories. UMass came out on top in the epee competition, winning the narrow, 5-4 battle. For Wellesley, Ledbetter led the way with two wins. 

Before the day's final match, Wellesley honored the lone member of the class of 2012. Zsofia Schweger, a native of Budapest, Hungary, is a four-year member of the Wellesley College fencing team, serving as a captain this season. Schweger is a two-time NCAA Regional Qualifier in sabre, finishing 34th overall at last season's competition. On campus, she is a Comparative Literature and Studio Art Major who recently finished a stint as a fellow in the Madeleine Albright Institute for Global Affairs. Schweger was also named a Pamela Daniels Fellow and has worked the Jewett Gallery of Art, as well as the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

The Wellesley fencing team will next compete at their second Northeast Conference meet of the season, traveling to UMass next weekend.
