Fencing Goes 3-3 at Northeast Conference Meet

AMHERST, Mass. – The Wellesley College fencing team wrapped up their Northeast Conference season this weekend, going 3-3 in dual meets at Amherst.

The Blue came away with wins over Boston University, Smith College and Dartmouth College, while falling to Tufts University, Vassar College and Boston College. Wellesley ends its dual meet season with an 11-10 overall record.

Against BU, Wellesley took the foil competition 6-3, while winning sabre, 7-2. Those weapons carried the Blue to a 15-12 team score. In a victory over Smith, Wellesley won all three weapons with 6-3 scores, cruising to the 18-9 overall win.

In their closest match of the day, the Blue came out on top of a 14-13 score against Dartmouth. Wellesley dropped the foil competition, 7-2, and lost epee, 5-4, but the sabre squad pulled out an 8-1 victory to hand the Blue the narrow 14-13 team win.

Against Tufts, Wellesley fell 16-12, with the highlight coming from a 8-1 in the foil competition.  In a 17-10 loss to Vassar, the Blue foil and sabre squads got close, but fell 5-4. Finally, Wellesley dropped all three weapons in a 21-6 loss to BC.

Individually, first-year Carla The and senior Zsofia Schweger led the Blue. The racked up 13 wins in foil, while Schweger also picked up 13 victories, fencing in sabre. Also fencing strong were first-year Oleander Furman in foil and sophomore Dania Wright in sabre, as they each picked up 10 wins. First-year Kathryn Ledbetter led the epee fencers with nine victories on the day.

Wellesley returns to action at the New England Championships on February 25th at Vassar.
