Fencing Eighth at New England Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Wellesley College fencing team took eighth place overall at the 2012 New England Championships, hosted at Vassar College this weekend. The Blue competed strong in the 14-team field, in the last tune up before the NCAA Regionals.

The foil squad finished in sixth place overall, going 22-17 between three first-years at the event. In the "A" competition, Carla The finished seventh overall, picking up seven victories. Oleander Furman competed in the "B" draw, also placing seventh, and recording eight wins. Olivia Wei wrapped up the foil fencers in the "C" event, taking seventh with seven wins.

The sabre squad also finished in sixth place, recording a 23-15 record. Sophomore Dania Wright took eighth in the "A" draw, with an 8-5 overall record. Senior Zsofia Schweger took sixth in the "B" event, also compiling an 8-5 mark. Junior Mariami Bekauri had Wellesley's highest ranking of the afternoon, finishing fifth in the "C" draw, recording a 7-5 record.

Wrapping up the competition, the epee squad finished 11th overall with 12 victories on the day. First-year Amanda Hui competed in the "A" draw, picking up a victory, while classmate Kathryn Ledbetter picked up seven wins to finish seventh in the "B" competition. Junior Elise Dong took ninth in the "C" event with four wins.

Up next, Wellesley will send seven fencers to the 2012 NCAA Regional on March 11th at Boston College.
