Blue Fencing Posts 5-2 Mark at Vassar Invite; Calventus-Coveney Goes 14-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- First year Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) went a perfect 14-0 in epee to lead Wellesley College fencing to a 5-2 record on Sunday at the Vassar College Invitational. Wellesley defeated CCNY, Yeshiva, Wagner, LIU Post, and Haverford, while dropping decision to Stevens and Northwestern during the event. The Blue are now 10-3 overall following their first two team competitions of the 2017-18 season.

Calventus-Coveney was Wellesley's top performer in epee, while senior Taylor Hood (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) posted matching 10-5 records to lead the foil squad. Sophomore Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) finished with a 14-4 mark to lead the Blue in sabre.

Stevens 16, Wellesley 11

Wellesley had to recover from an opening match defeat to Stevens, as the Blue lost all three weapons in a tight 16-11 loss to the Ducks. Wellesley fell 5-4 in both sabre and foil, while dropping a 6-3 decision in epee. Calventus-Coveney was a perfect 3-0 in her bouts, while Hood and Harney checked in with 2-1 records.

Wellesley 21, CCNY 6

The Blue bounced back in a big way in their second match-up, defeating CCNY, 21-6, on the strength of matching 8-1 victories in sabre and foil. Wellesley also took a 5-4 victory in epee. First years Molly McLachlan (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Lucille Tsao (Succasunna, N.J.) were both 2-0 in foil against CCNY. Senior Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass.) posted a 3-0 mark in sabre.

Wellesley 22, Yeshiva 5

Wellesley continued to cruise in a 22-5 victory over Yeshiva, earning a 9-0 sweep in foil, an 8-1 win in sabre, and a narrow 5-4 victory in epee. McLachlan was again 2-0, while classmate Hanamei Shao (Vandenberg AFB, Calif.) also grabbed her first win. Senior Hannah Schmidt (Oshkosh, Wis.) and first year Corinne Wilklow (Fairfield, Conn.) were each 2-1 in epee, while first year Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) led the way with a 3-0 mark in sabre.

Northwestern 20, Wellesley 7

Northwestern snapped the Blue win streak at two, taking a 20-7 win in Wellesley's fourth round of action. Calventus-Coveney (3-0 in epee) and Hood (2-1 in foil) were the only two Wellesley fencers to post winning records in their bouts.

Wellesley 20, Wagner 7

After falling to Northwestern, 20-7, the Blue posted the first of two straight 20-7 wins of their own against Wagner. The Blue swept past a shorthanded foil squad, 9-0, and used two wins each from Calventus-Coveney and Schmidt to take a 6-3 win in epee. Tied 4-4 in sabre, a win from Harney in the final bout earned the Blue the 5-4 victory.

Wellesley 20, LIU Post 7

Barowsky, Harney, and Park all went 3-0 to earn the Blue a 9-0 sweep in sabre as part of a 20-7 Wellesley win against LIU Post. Hood and Maurer added 2-0 records in foil, with Calventus-Coveney picking-up another pair of victories in epee.

Wellesley 15, Haverford 12

Calventus-Coveney completed her perfect day with a 3-0 record to lead the Blue to a close 15-12 victory over Haverford. The Blue took a 5-4 win in epee, but the Fords posted a 5-4 win in foil. Wellesley found the three-bout edge in sabre to win the match, as Harney was 3-0 and Barowsky posted a 2-1 record.

Wellesley will travel to Brown University for the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season on Saturday, November 18, at 9:00 AM.
