Eleven Fencers to Represent Wellesley at NCAA Northeast Regional

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Eleven fencers will represent Wellesley College fencing at the 2020 NCAA Fencing Northeast Regional Championships on Sunday, March 8, at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. Competition at Barton Hall will begin at 9:00 AM.

Wellesley will send five returning fencers, while six will make their NCAA Regional debuts. In 2019, Senior Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) took 9th overall in foil and junior Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) finished 12th overall in epee to lead the Blue at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Admission will be free to all spectators. 18 institutions make up the Northeast Regional field, including the host Big Red, Wellesley, Boston College, New York University, Brandeis University, Sacred Heart University, Brown University, St. John's University (NY), City College of New York, Tufts University, Columbia University – Barnard College, Vassar College, Harvard University, Yale University, Hunter College, Yeshiva University, Long Island University, Mass. Institute of Technology. All quarterfinals will have 35 fencers (unless there are less than 35 entries), all semifinals will have 21 fencers, and all finals will have 12 fencers.

The 2020 NCAA Fencing Championships will take place March 19-22 at the TCF Center in downtown Detroit, Mich. The National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships include individual events in each of the six weapons (women's sabre, women's foil, women's épée, men's sabre, men's foil and men's épée). Participants will be selected by the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee and announced on Tuesday, March 10, 2020.
