Fencing Finishes at 4-3 at Rangers Fall Invitational on Sunday

MADISON, N.J. -- The Blue fencing team had a winning day going 4-3 at the Rangers Fall Invitational hosted by Drew University on Sunday.

Foil member Ella Boodell (Edgemont, N.Y.) set the pace for Wellesley, going 10-1 in four matches. Sophomore Nerine Uyanik (San Jose, Calif.) had a terrific 11-2 record throughout the day and improved her overall record to a team leading 20-2. In epee, Elena Vona (Millstone, N.J.) went 10-3 and junior Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) went a solid 11-4 for the Blue. In five sabre matches, Brooke Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished with a winning record of 8-6.

Wellesley 22, Denison 5

The Blue began the day with a commanding victory over Denison University. Uyanik, Samantha Renton (Rockville, Md.), and Alexia Gilioli (New York, N.Y.) all went a perfect 3-0 in foil. Vona and Kimura followed up with a 3-0 record in epee and Dodrill went 3-0 in sabre as well.

Wellesley 13, NJIT 14

In her first match of the day, Boodell went 3-0 and led the foil squad to a 6-3 win. In epee Kimura stayed hot going 2-1, but the team went down 6-3. Finally, Dodrill picked up a win in sabre but it was not enough as Wellesley fell in a close 14-13 matchup. 

Wellesley 25, Clemson 2

The Blue dominated over the Tigers of Clemson University in a 25-2 win. Sophomore Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) led foil to a 9-0 win with a perfect 3-0 record. Epee went a perfect 9-0 and sabre 7-2 in the win.

Wellesley 19, Army 8

Wellesley would pick up a second consecutive victory 19-8 over Army. Epee set the tone going 7-2 including a 3-0 effort from Panya Tang (Toronto, Ontario). Foil would also go 7-2 with perfect matches from Uyanik and Renton. Dodrill would go 3-0 for sabre in a close 5-4 loss, but their effort was enough to secure the win.

Wellesley 12, Wagner 15

The Blue suffered a second loss in a tight battle with Wagner. Makana Burch (Portland, Ore.) and Dodrill each won a match in sabre. Foil and epee each went 5-4 in the loss.

Wellesley 4, Princeton 23

In a tough loss to Princeton, Sejal Saxena (Chappaqua, N.Y.) picked up a win for foil along with Boodell and Po. Kimura also earned a Blue win in the loss.

Wellesley 26, Yeshiva 1

The final match of the day for Wellesley was won in a 26-1 rout over Yeshiva. First year Leena Hobson (Oakland, Calif.), sophomore Candice Xie (Jiangsu, China), and first year Mia Chao (Washington, D.C.) all went 3-0 in sabre. Uyanik, Boodell, and Po finished up their dominant day with 3-0 wins and Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) and Panya Tang were perfect in epee.

Up next, the Blue travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for the Vassar Invitational on Sunday, November 14 starting at 10:00 AM.
