Wellesley Fencing Goes 4-2 at Brandeis Invitational; Foil and Epee Defeat Division I Cornell

WALTHAM, Mass. – Wellesley College fencing went 4-2 at the Brandeis Invitational with wins against Yeshiva University, Lawrence University, Drew University , and Long Island University on Sunday.

Foil squad earned five wins on the day, including a 5-4 victory over Division I Cornell. Sophomore Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan) and first year Phoebe Li (Palo Alto, Calif.) both had 10 wins and first year Lauren Khoo (San Francisco, Calif.) contributed eight victories.

Epee had four squad wins, including a 6-3 victory over Division I Cornell. First year Alisha Li (Warren, N.J.) led the Blue on the day with 13 victories and sophomore Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) was second on the team with 11 wins.

Junior Mia Chao (Washington, D.C.) was the high-scorer for sabre squad with nine bout victories on the day, including one against Cornell.

Wellesley 27, Yeshiva 0

The Blue earned all 27 possible points in a standout performance against Yeshiva. Senior Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.), Huang and sophomore Claire Ma (Boston, Mass.) all went 3-0 for foil, Chao and first years Rebecca Hsieh (Annandale, Va.) and Naomi Wang (Boston, Mass.) picked up the nine points in sabre, and junior Elena Vona (Millstone, N.J.), Xu, sophomore Lily Millard (Selkirk, N.Y.) and first year Riley Weed (Guilford, Conn.) went undefeated in epee.

Cornell 15, Wellesley 12

Epee and foil both earned squad wins over Division I Cornell. A. Li went 3-0 in epee, while Xu and Vona totaled three more bout victories. Huang and P. Li were each 2-1 in foil while Khoo added a win. Chao scored one point in sabre.

Wellesley 17, Lawrence 10

Foil and epee squads earned victories as A. Li and Xu both went 3-0 for epee. Chao, Khoo and P. Li all had a pair of victories while Po and Vona each contributed one win.

Saint John's 18, Wellesley 9

Xu and A. Li both scored one win for epee squad and Khoo picked up a victory for foil.

Wellesley 16, Drew 11

Huang and P. Li swept all three matches in foil while Khoo and Po each added a point. A. Li and Xu both had two victories in epee and Chao and junior Makana Burch (Washougal, Wash.) each added a pair of bout wins in sabre.

Wellesley 21, LIU 6

All three squads defeated LIU, with foil and epee winning 8-1. Khoo, P. Li. A. Li, Vona, and Burch all recorded three wins, while Huang and Xu had two. Chao and Wang both registered a win in sabre.
