Fuchs Nets 6 Goals in Wellesley Loss to Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Wellesley College lacrosse team dropped a 20-13 contest to Muhlenberg on the road on Wednesday evening. The loss dips the Blue to 1-5, while the Mules improve to 4-1 on the season.

The hosts opened up a 3-1 lead after the first 10 minutes of play, backed by two goals from Molly Davin. Wellesley battled back to take a 4-3 lead, scoring three goals in less than two minutes as Meagan Fuchs, Claire Canty and Elizabeth Clemetson each found the back of the net.

The teams went back and forth, trading goals, until a fourth tally from Davin gave the Mules a slim 8-7 advantage at the break.

Wellesley opened the second half with three straight scores, to open up a 10-8 lead with 26:31 to play. Fuchs tallied a pair of goals during the stretch, while Brit Misciz added her first of the game. 

From that point on, it was all Muhlenberg, as the Mules strung together eight straight goals over the next 13 minutes of play, opening a 16-10 lead. Wellesley added back to back scores from Meredith Roy and Claire Canty with just under 10 to play, but Muhlenberg scored four of the game's final five goals to seal the 20-13 victory.

Wellesley ended with a slim 19-16 advantage on the draw, while outshooting the Mules 39-32.

Fuchs led all scorers with a career-high of six goals for the Blue. Allison Robbins and Canty each recorded four-point games, as Robbins tallied a goal and three assists, and Canty added two and two. Rachel Hanscom rounded out the offense with two helpers. 

Defensively, Roy recorded eight draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers to pace the Blue. Clemetson also added five ground balls, while Robbins picked up three draw controls.

Muhlenberg was led by five goals from Angela Napoletano, while Davin recorded four. Michelle Certosimo recorded a nine-point effort with three goals and six assists, while Kelsey Elmer tallied two scores and three assists to finish with five points. 

Certosimo led the Mules with nine draw controls and five ground balls. Stephanie Umbach headed up the defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls of her own. In net, Tiffany Kreider made 13 saves to earn the victory.

Wellesley next plays on Saturday, returning to Massachusetts to take on Mount Holyoke on the road at 12:00pm. The game marks the NEWMAC opener for both squads.
