Emerson Gets By Wellesley Lacrosse, 17-15

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) registered seven points (five goals, two assists) but Wellesley College lacrosse fell 17-15 in a NEWMAC game against Emerson College at Butler Stadium on Saturday.

Junior Callie Krosin (Pikesville, Md.) spearheaded the Lions' (4-6 Overall, 1-4 NEWMAC) offense with four goals and four assists. Senior Lauren Longstreet (Alamo, Calif.) tallied a game-high six goals. First year Ava DelliCompagni (Coatesville, Pa.) recorded three assists, seven ground balls and nine draw controls. Sophomore keeper Ellie Spotts (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) made 16 saves in goal.

In addition to Tipton, senior Gabrielle Shell (Columbus, Ohio) scored a hat-trick for the Blue (2-9 Overall, 0-5 NEWMAC). Classmate Willa McGough (Plainfield, N.H.) and first years Lillian Games (Wayne, Pa.) and Mallory Kennison (Norway, Maine) all had two goals. First year Amelia Dupont (New York, N.Y.) won five controls. Junior Julee Sharma (Lake Mary, Fla.) scooped up five ground balls. Sophomore goalie Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) stopped 12 shots.

Emerson went into the fourth quarter with a 15-11 lead. Wellesley made it a three-goal game at 16-13 with 9:38 left in the contest. The Lions responded with a goal from DelliCompagni seven seconds later. While the Blue scored two unanswered late goals from Tipton and Shell, the team ultimately came up just short.

In the first quarter, Tipton scored the first two goals of the game. Both teams scored early and often in the first quarter, with Emerson up 6-5 after one frame. 

Each team scored in the first two minutes of the second quarter to put the Lions up 7-6. Emerson rattled off five unanswered goals over the next 12 minutes to carry a 12-6 lead by halftime. 

Wellesley cut the deficit to 13-9 by the 10 minute mark of the third quarter. Both teams tallied a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes, giving Emerson its 15-11 lead after three quarters.

Wellesley outshot Emerson 45-38. The Lions narrowly won the draw control battle 19-17. Emerson went 3-of-11 on free position shots while Wellesley was 2-for-7. 

Wellesley wraps up a three-game homestand on Wednesday, April 10 at 7:00 PM against Smith. Emerson hosts Clark at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, April 10.
