Smith Deals Setback to Wellesley Lacrosse

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Smith College topped Wellesley College lacrosse, 20-5 in a NEWMAC game on Wednesday evening at Butler Stadium. 

Senior Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y.) put up seven points (five goals, two assists) to lead the Pioneers (7-7 Overall, 4-3 NEWMAC). Sophomore Caroline Sanders (Orange County, Calif.) scored three goals with assists, while junior Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, Calif.) scored four goals to lead Smith past the Blue (2-10 overall, 0-6 NEWMAC). Senior Bella DeAngelo (Portsmouth, R.I.) won six draw controls. Sophomore Shannon Houtenville (East Windsor, N.J.) stopped a pair of shots.

Senior Gabrielle Shell (Columbus, Ohio) and first year Lillian Games (Wayne, Pa.) both scored two goals for Wellesley. Sophomore Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) added a goal and an assist. Junior Anna Tutek (Trumbull, Conn.) caused three turnovers and snatched four ground balls. Sophomore goalie Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) earned 12 saves for the Blue.

Sanders and Wellesley Shell exchanged goals to open the contest before the visitors went on a 6-0 first quarter run to take a 7-1 advantage heading into the second quarter. Sanders recorded a first quarter hat trick, scoring the first Smith goal at 13:25 and the final Smith goal of the quarter at 1:47. 

Shell found Games at 13:43 of the second quarter to end the Smith run. The Pioneers outscored the Blue 4-2 throughout the remainder of the second. Smith led 11-4 at halftime.

The Pioneers scored all six goals of the third quarter, including a pair from Arancio. Smith tacked on two more in the fourth before a goal from Games at the 6:49 mark stopped the run. The Pioneers added a final game to its tally to finish the 20-5 affair.

Smith outshot Wellesley 45-12 and won the draw control battle 20-8. The Pioneers converted 6-of-8 free position shots while Wellesley made its only attempt.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, April 13. Wellesley is at Springfield at 1:00 PM. Smith hosts Wheaton at 12:00 PM.
