Blue Prevail in Double Overtime Against Endicott

Beverly, Mass. – The Wellesley College soccer team pulled out a 2-1 double-overtime win on Tuesday evening at Endicott College.  The Gulls dropped to 1-1-1 following the non-conference loss while the Blue improve to 2-1.

Just 2:56 into the second overtime, Wellesley first-year forward Ariel Chao  got behind the Endicott backfield and beat Gulls keeper Natalie Wyrsch with a well-placed shot to the left corner of the net, winning the game for the Blue in dramatic fashion. Chao's game-winner was the second straight for the rookie.

Early in the first half of the match, the Gulls appeared poised for score first as forward Chelsea Garlock had a good attempt to put the home team ahead.  Garlock, however, was denied by Wellesley goalie Sarah Gray who deflected the sophomore's shot off the cross bar and then cleared the ball away.

Later in the first half at 29:28, Wellesley took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Gulls to go ahead 1-0.  Wellesley midfielder Lena Cardoso collected an errant back pass near the goalie box and chipped the ball over the keeper's hands for the game's first goal.  The Blue took a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Wellesley looked as though they would hold for the 1-0 victory until Endicott pressured the Blue defense with 47 seconds remaining.  Garlock's initial shot from front right corner of the box deflected off the goalie's hands but Gulls senior midfielder Karyn Plante was there to clean up the rebound, finding the back of the net for the equalizing goal.  For Plante, it was her first goal of the season.

The two squads would exchange just one shot in the first overtime until Wellesley's game-ending goal in the double overtime.

Wellesley's goalie Gray made seven saves while allowing the lone goal and Endicott's Wyrsch stopped two shots on goal and gave up two goals.

Endicott will travel to Nichols College for their first TCCC match of the season on September 11th at 2 pm in Dudley.  Wellesley hosts the Wellesley Invitational on the same day with a match against UMass Boston starting at 1:30 pm.
