Turchi's OT Goal Leads Blue Past UMass-Boston

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Megan Turchi launched a beautiful penalty kick over the head of the UMass-Boston keeper and into the back of the net, as the Wellesley College soccer team defeated the Beacons 2-1 in double overtime.

The victory sends the Blue (3-1) to tomorrow's championship game of the Wellesley Invitational to face St. Lawrence at 1:30pm. UMass-Boston (2-1) will play Simmons in the consolation game at 11:00am.

After the first overtime ended without a winner, Turchi's goal came 1:39 into the second overtime period, following a Beacon red card. The goal was the first of the season for Turchi, who finished second on the Blue in scoring in 2009.

Wellesley got on the board first, as first-year Ariel Chao continued her three-game scoring streak with a goal in the 17th-minute of play. Chao was assisted by classmate Ava Mokhtari.

The Blue's early lead would stand until the Beacons knotted the game at 1-1 in the 59th minute of play. Ally Modzelewski tallied the equalizer for UMass-Boston.

In the first overtime period, Wellesley recored a 3-1 shot advantage, but the Blue couldn't find the back of the net. For the game, the Wellesley out-shot the Beacons, 24-8.

UMass-Boston keeper Katie Coscia played a solid game, tallying eight saves. Wellesley netminder Sarah Gray picked up two saves on the afternoon.
