Soccer Defeats Springfield 1-0 in Double Overtime

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College soccer team celebrated Homecoming weekend in dramatic fashion, as the Blue posted a 1-0 victory over NEWMAC-rival Springfield in double overtime.  First-year Lena Cardoso netted the game winner for Wellesley, improving the team to 4-4-1 (2-0-1 NEWMAC) on the year, while Springfield's ledger is set to 6-4 (2-1 NEWMAC).

Cardoso's goal was set up by an indirect started by Megan Turchi.  Turchi made the initial pass to Emily Wilson who tapped the ball to Cardoso for the golden goal.  The score was the second of the season for Cardoso.

Springfield held a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but five saves from Wellesley's Sarah Gray kept the game scoreless.

The Pride had its best chance to score early in the second when a hard shot off the foot of Springfield's Ashley McFarlane was saved by Gray to preserve the tie.  Wellesley also had a chance to win it in regulation, but a 75th-minute attempt from Cardoso hit the cross bar.

The Blue took both shots in the first overtime, before connecting on the game-winner, just 1:12 into the second extra period.

Gray finished the game with 10 saves, earning the shutout victory for the Blue.  In goal for Springfield, Erin Greenstein made nine saves.

Both teams continue their NEWMAC slate on Tuesday.  Wellesley travels to Wheaton for a 4:00pm game, while Springfield hosts Smith at 7:00pm.
