Wheaton Defeats Wellesley Soccer

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's soccer team scored three goals over an 8:53 span late in the second half to break open a 2-1 lead against visiting Wellesley College and eventually post a 5-1 victory during Tuesday's New England and Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game in Mirrione Stadium.

Improving to 11-1-1 overall and 3-1 in league play with their third straight win, the Lyons entered today's contest receiving national votes and ranked fourth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).  Wellesley, which was dealt its first conference loss, slips to 5-5-1 and 2-1-1.

Wheaton freshman Rebecca Raymond figured in three of the goals with one tally and two assists, while senior Emily Hough scored once and added one helper.  Junior Jessica Stuart, sophomore Cassey Muse and freshman Nicole Sherman each also found the back of the net.  Freshman goalie Kerry Condon was credited with five stops while improving to 6-1.

For Wellesley, sophomore Chelsea-Ann Patry made it a 2-1 game early in the second half with her second goal of the fall, while junior goalkeeper Sarah Gray stopped four shots.

The hosts took advantage of their first shot in the sixth minute, when Hough fed a perfect through ball to Muse, who rushed past the Wellesley defense before depositing her team-best ninth goal into the lower right corner of the net.  Sherman extended Wheaton's lead to 2-0 on a long left-footed boot from outside the box at 38:51, as the ball carried over a backpedaling Gray.

After the Blue trimmed its deficit to one at 53:06, the Lyons responded with back-to-back goals 1:59 apart, with the first coming off a perfectly-placed free kick from senior Alessia Viscomi, whose pass was finished off by Hough's header at 77:07.  Raymond scored her team's fourth goal on a breakaway at 79:06 before assisting Stuart on a corner-kick goal at 86:00.

Wheaton heads to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Saturday morning for a NEWMAC match beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Wellesley next plays NEWMAC-rival Coast Guard on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in New London, CT.
